The BMW 323i is Ted's car until the IRS catches up with the irregularities in the Beneke Fabricators books, which not only threatens to bankrupt Ted but could also send him to prison. He is forced to reduce his lifestyle and sells his car. He replaces it with a modest Geo Metro. ("Bug")
