Well all in all it works pretty well, all the BB codes are there, it feels like a mega episode bonus.
The direction and the photo direction are the same (very high) level as the series. Ditto for the narrative rhythm and editing, and of course the realism of staging (except on one point ...). Gilligan take the time to explain things, to escalate the tension. The scenes of suspense and action are magnificent. Very nice acting game in general with special mention for Robert Forster (RIP) who kept the perfect same attitude as in the series with always a high-flying presence. By the way, his character proves once again a lot of greed!
Otherwise I also liked the evolution of the character of Jesse after his ordeal. We feel he's getting mature and I'll even go so far as to say that he inherited from Walter his determination and his genius to achieve his goals ...
Well, I can understand that some remained a bit frustrated but if we take this as a big bonus episode I think it does the job.
After this general opinion we may be able to evoke a particular point ...
How could the actor of Todd have been playing by being in total false connection of physiognomy ??
How could a production with a sense of detail also pushed on the series to let pass that? We had seen the same problem with Huell in Better Call Saul. But here we could still convince ourselves that the character had a very changeable physique given the differences of time between the last season of BCS and the first appearance of Huell in BB. It shocked a bit but it passed ...
But there for Todd all his scenes in El Camino are in midquel of the last season of Breaking Bad, so it does not happen. It would almost be laughable if it did not spoil all the realism yet so well set up in the universe Breaking Bad.
Even if Jesse Plemons would have a health problem that he would have made it impossible to prepare physically for the role, there are other solutions. Either we put it less forward in the film or we unlock the budget for a VFX team like The Irish Man or Gimini Man.
Finally no excuses Vince, it's mega fail on a work yet almost perfect. For me much worse than the Starbucks cup in GOT. If film was aimed at real fans, we are on the verge of insult ...
That a 9.5/10 for me 🙏🏼
